help/ recommendations for a ride on cam
« on: December 05, 2011, 06:34:18 PM »
Right guys I am looking for a ride on camera to mount to my bike for track days, playing on my crosser and trips abroad etc

I am not looking to spend mega money (maybe £150ish). Looking for decent quality but doesn't have to be specatular, I am not one of those people who have to have the latest high specs when there is something out there that works perfectly fine already but vids need to be watchable or what is the point? I would prefer if it had a screen for lining it up and came with mounting bracket/ helmet mount and possibly a waterproof case (or available as reasonably priced accessories). My mate Horney has a Contour HD which seems pretty good he got it awhile ago when they were big bucks but I see you can get them for a little over £100 now so this is my current front runner unless anyone can recommend something different/ better?  :465:

Ive just bought a Drift HD 170 Stealth. it has a small screen for lining it up. You get lots of mounting bits n bobs with it Helmet or bars whichever you want.

I've got the Gopro Hero HD. They've come down in price now only 230 bucks US. Not as aerodynamic as some but qualities very good imo. If you wanna check quality of vids of any brand, youtube's the best place.

Took MG70 advise and check quality of Contour HD, Drift HD170 and GoPro HD Hero on you tube, there are loads of comparision videos that let you see footage side by side. So conditions favoured different cameras better than other but if I am honest all are adequate for what I want. So quality of footage aside I looked at prices (just a quick look on ebay UK not including ones from the states etc) but looks like
Countour HD between £115-£130 (depending on extras like spare battery/ waterproof case etc)
Drift HD 170 approx £140-£150
GoPro HD Hero is most expensive at about £170 (although can get bit cheaper from the states)
So all roughly within budget.
Looked at few reviews/ video reviews and I like some of the features of the Drift, namely the screen and remote control. Thought the screen would be good for setting up as I will be moving this between 3 different bikes (road bike, track bike and offroad bikes) and the remote would be good for road riding and especially handy on my trip abroad next year to cut out all the boring bits but still get the good bits without having to stop and put camera on.  So its my current leader...

How you getting on with your Drift Delboy777? Hows battery life etc?

Comparing footage on the internet won't tell you anything about the comparable quality of the cameras, depends entirely what compression they've used before posting their vids.

I have the older non HD GoPro Motorsport Hero Wide.

Comparison Drift HD170 vs Contour HD vs GoPro HD | Action Cameras South Africa

Comparaison GoPro HD vs Drift HD170 vs ContourHD vs ATC9k

thought vids like the above would give a good comparision as it is the same user/ subject, I maybe wrong though I don't really do photography stuff or video uploading etc

That's valid, yes (you'd assume they've used the same for each camera). I was meaning comparing videos from different sources.

Decisions decisions.
In the first clip and purely going off the clip I'd pick the Drift but I thought it was weird the Gopro was showing the grass a totally different colour to the others. I can honestly say mines been accurate here, if it's green it's been green and not orange overtone. Yet in the second clip it out performs the Drift imo and no orange overtone.

I'm not a fan of the contour I've heard from others of reliability issues, actually a guy came in the store complaining about his contour freezing up while I was looking at one, so say i walked out.

I really like the features of the drift though remote and built in screen. You can get a screen for the Gopro ( which can play back but I only use for setting up - saves weight and battery ) but thats extra.

A pro and con list might help you decide. I can easily make a list from my experience with a Gopro hopefully someone else on here that knows their Drift can help with a list too.
