Girlie Ads
« on: December 06, 2011, 08:41:57 PM »
Not sure we need those banner ads for girlies from Russia and the Far East on the forum page...it may just be me seeing them !

There is a terrible temptation to click on them not that I'm interested but does it lower the tone and what do our female members think ...should we have these sorts of ads on here :027:

I have to agree. While I understand that ads help pay costs we dont pay as members, I would have thought that ads targetting us as bikers would be better, and certainly less offensive.
There are plenty of other sites on the web if you want to find girlie sites

Or alternatively ,add some balance - ads that are for hunky men for the lady members?

I thought they were all part of the 'for sale' area of the forum - was thinking of putting a bid in for Blair :038:

1. Most ads are based on cookies left on your computer from previous searches/websites  :007:

2. Get firefox and install Adblock plus. No more ads on the screen and even when you watch youtube videos. :)

As this is something we would need to ask the Admin if he can do something about I'll contact him. It might be the ad service that the server has been subscribed to has a rotating list of ads and that one is in there so not much can be done about it but let's wait and see.

Also at the end of the day folks we need to realise the people that own this forum needs to pay for it one way or another. We don't pay subscription fees so revenue needs to be generated another way, if all of us are willing to start paying then there probably won't be a need for ads. But the 1st word of paying for it and we'll lose forum members because not everyone will be willing to pay (I've been on many a forum this has happened).

Anyway let's see what Admin says.

If you are interested in looking at bikes on tracks please visit my website www.KnockhillRacing.com (my little hobby). That website is sponsored by our forum supporting vendor better known as Carbon4U.

I keep getting kiddy scooters by skates.........not enough ground clearance for me  :008:

If it works on algorithems then I have not been looking at any skates or scooters  :027:

And I thought 'scooters by skates' worked on feet, silly me :112:.

I get ads at work, but not at home where I use Firefox because I have a choice  :028:.

Most ads are based on cookies left on your computer from previous searches/websites

Yep that quite true  :002:

We have no control over the ads and they are delivered based on several factors. The main ones are:

1. The content on the page.

Write about adult content (even content like this thread) and corresponding ads will be delivered.

This Side Street section has lots of such content, especially in some of the Adult orientated jokes etc. If you write about such subjects then you have to expect corresponding ads to be displayed.

2. Previous surfing history

This also holds true. Absolutely everyone collects cookies from just about every site you visit. Many of these are tracking cookies and they are designed to deliver advertising content based on your previous surfing habits.

Personally I can see an example of this myself as I was on the British Gas website earlier paying my bill (ouch..). Now all I see is British Gas adverts on this site.

I should point out that these cookies are delivered to you on other websites you visit, we don't deliver any here, only the basic one that keeps you logged in or out.

Yes you can block cookies in your browser but surfing will be a pain in the butt most of the time. As the cookies don't personally identify you then they are pretty harmless IMO. You could also block the ads but do that and we wouldn't get any advertisers and hence no income, and that means no site, period   :006:

Please remember that everyone will see completely different ads so there's no point in mentioning a particular one as there are about 50,000 roughly. All this isn't anything new, it's now standard practice everywhere. In fact use something like Facebook, or even Google (search), and you leave your life behind, as they will track you to the grave, and deliver ads accordingly whereever you go.

As Bel said, the site is free and the ads produce income to cover our costs. The alternative is a subscription model where members pay which is not always the best way to go.

Cheers  :031:

I can confirm the ads follow your patterns of internet usage. I have only had the girlie ads after reading some nsfw joke threads on a Peugeot site-I'm now seeing handbags after some Christmas shopping sites.
