Going to the TT
« on: January 12, 2012, 05:02:30 PM »
Hello there,

Me and my chums would like to go watch the TT this year. Tally-ho. Trouble is we've never been before and don't know the first thing. So please educate us/me. We're wondering things like:

Do we have to get tickets for grandstands? Or do we just get a ferry and B&B and stand near the track in a nearby pub garden/field with cans? And can we drive around when we're there or are all the roads shut?

Sorry for the simple questions, I have no idea...

You don't need to worry about grandstand tickets as there are loads of places along the course where you can get great views.

However booking ferries and accommodation can be very difficult so you need to get these sorted ASAP.

Just watched closer to the edge and I want to go as well. The DVD came with a free course guide which is brill, lists lots of good vantage points and hint about travelling around the island when the racing has started. Will look to go next year  :007:

People panick over booking. But if you wait until the end of February all the reserve bookings that have not been paid for are released.
Accommodation is a different kettle of fish, need to get that booked as soon as pos.
Visit iomtt, com for loads of info
We haven't booked yet, we're taking 2 vans, 2 caravans and a solo motorbike,
Entries for TT just started this week, so when I get our start number I'll let you know. Call and see us in the paddock for a brew.
Maybe have your picture taken sat in our F2 sidecar.
Your first TT, your senses will be in overdrive......Magic.
Just a few points to beware of, the Manx police are great, but speed limits are strictly enforced. Mega high fines and even imprisonment. So do yourself a favour and stick to the limits, especially through villages.
Mad Sunday.....give it a miss. The mountain road is one way the whole fortnight now, so I'd advise you do a lap or two early mornings.

Do as we do Mad Sunday, take a picnic and sit at the Gooseneck or Windy Corner and watch all the wannabe racers fall off,

Enjoy yourself and stay safe

Went this year for the 3rd time and had a brill time. As for some good viewing points, you can get to the bottom of Barregarrow if you walk through the fields and it's mental. Get there early as space is limited.

If you want to get a feeling of speed go to either Cronky Voddy straight or The end of Sulby straight to see them come past at 200 mph just feet from you!!

If you are based in Douglas you can walk to some good viewing points towards Signpost corner where you can get close to the action and get good photos.

Then there are he usual classic viewing points such as Gooseneck, hillberry or up the mountain which are cool.

Also there are some good spots just outside of Kirkmichael.

As others have said accommodation can be a problem so book early and try either a home stay or rent a house. Try he iomtt forums to find these. Also obey the speed limits and go mental early in the morning when there is nothing on the road and you hit he no speed limit sections!

At the end of the day here are so many viewing spots I'd recommend watching some TT videos to see what takes your fancy.

And last of all enjoy yourselves!

David

Some really good views around Ramsey as well, I'm quite lucky that my mate has a light aircraft so we normally fly into Andreas airfield and camp there from the weekend.

That'll be great.

Anybody wanting to help out at the TT marshalling, you don't have to commit to a week. If you can marshal for just one session your efforts will be most welcome. No experience necessary and you do get a free programme. Also get closer still to the action.
I myself will be doing a few sessions during practice week, if the outfits going ok.
Simply sign on in the marshals office in the paddock and watch a 20 min video and away you go.
No marshals no racing.
Number of nights I spend out of the paddock depends on how outfit is going. Have a tent in paddock in case we need to burn the midnight oil.......or PARTY!!

Thanks for all the tips guys, well excited!

And Tikka, if we can come visit in the paddock that would be amazing!!

I was going to look for travel now but realised the dates arent confirmed yet, think they're likely to change? Accomodation seems alright, I'll check with the gang but I think camping could be fun!

Here's the link to the teams website. Hopefully my mate Tim will be updating it nearer the time. I'll keep you informed.

http://timlanghamracingtt2011.webs.com/

The outfit is undergoing major surgery at the moment. After suffering a series of fractures last year, a complete new headstock is being fabricated and new forks fitted.
The chassis is also being beefed up to prevent any further stress problems.
Motors are being prepared.
The IOM course is punishing on machinery. Any weekness anywhere and it will show up there.

If you would like your name on the outfit, for a small donation to the racing fund this can be done.
The larger the donation the larger the letters (or logo)
You could be part of the TT.

I went in 2008 stayed at a friend of a friends house because we left it to late for B&B, camping is a safe bet this late?? You can normally watch from anywhere, we booked tickets for the granstand on the finish line for the last days racing.

If i was to go again i wouldnt take my road bike a few mates in a van/car would be a better crack IMO.

We rode the course on the Mad Sunday never again for me sh*t myself to be honest, people flying past with the intent to kill them selfs.

Nitelife is good. Glad i went was on my list of things to do.
