The D3 comes with numberplate light. I took it off 'cos it's ugly and I wanted my plate sat right up under the tail light surround, I don't give a toss about petty legalities, and it would only be lighting up an illegal number plate anyway, lol.

It was the absence of one from your pictures that prompted my question.  Thanks for clarifying :002:

It's your call, obviously, on your bike, but I wasn't sure of the law myself...

I figured it was, hence the explanation of its absence. I just prefer how it looks without it, with the plate shifted upwards. I haven't had a number plate light on a bike since 1998. I figure the only time any copper's going to be looking at the plate while my lights are on is if he's behind me, in which case his headlights will be illuminating it anyway. The plate itself isn't legal anyway, and the way I ride it most of the time certainly isn't, lol, so I'm not going to bother about small legalities - aesthetics are more important to me. As an adult I take a common sense approach to the law - I adhere to the sensible stuff that says (for example) don't stab someone or set fire to their house, but ignore the stupid stuff that tells me (for example) how big my number plate has to be, or whether it should have a light.

while i agree with your approach to the law in that way, i dont think the law would agree back again..

so, does that mean prior MOT, you will replace your bike, refit the light with some temporary fixing, or nod/wink/bung a few quid to a friendly MOT tester?  :027:

When it comes to the crunch, I reckon they'd be more bothered about the second gear 80mph wheelie or whatever than a lack of number plate light, lol.

I have a sensible tester (unfortunately I can't get an MOT over the phone anymore, lol). On the Bandit I just gaffer tape a legal plate over the small one, with a small reflector stuck to it and a tiny LEd bolt light as number plate light, then just pull it off afterwards. If I still have the Street when MOT is due it'll only be a 2 minute job to stick a legal plate and number plate light on for the test.

I know it's not your "thing", Machine, but for the sake of discussion, wouldn't a small plate light sit neatly hidden by the duck tail of the rear light surround?

Or would it be noticable from the side?

You comment about an led light made me think that it couuld be really, really small and still do the job...

I thought about getting a tiny self adhesive LEd one that I could stick concealed on the underside of the tail light surround beak, but I'drather not have one at all. If it came to having to fit one then that's what I'd do, but only if I had to.

I might have a go at that when I get around to to fitting a tail tidy - a happy compromise for me!  :002:
