Hi everybody
« on: February 12, 2012, 08:50:59 AM »
Looking for a new bike as my Fazer was written off, Triple at the top of my list, just need the insurance cheque...

Anyone do any serious commuting here? At the moment 110 miles a day, all year round (but looking for a job closer to home!), so I'll be looking for accessories advice to make the winter commute bearable...!

Trevor

Hola &  :401:
I used to commute 100kms a day and switched from a sports bike to the street, much more comfortable and fun to ride. Sometimes the ride to work just isn't long enough  :008:

I use the kriega tailpacks for transporting everything which I would highly recommend, 100% water proof and easy to use on and off the bike  :062:

hiya trev,

Afraid I can't give you advice on winter commuting but I've ridden Manchester to Blackpool and back for work on many occasions without any effort. The M61/M6 can get very windswept with poor visibility during the winter so I prefer to  use my free train pass then.

I'd say the seat can get uncomfortable after 1 to 1 1/2 hours if wearing textile trousers. I wear leather trousers and don't have an issue with comfort at all and am 6 ft 2 / 15 stone. Done Manchester- London and Manchester - Newbury trips a few times no bother. (I do ride back too or I'd still be there!)

So far only test rode a ST, (new one ordered), but from my experience of many other bikes, I think you'd be hard pushed to find a better performance commuter, unless it's all high speed / motorway. You'll probably want the fly screen and visor, especially for the winter. Ever tried heated vest or gloves?

 :401: along Magic Trev,

If I'm honest I'm not sure I would pick the street for a 100 mile commute - My opinion only but note I am more of a leisure user than commuter. As already mentioned high speeds can be labouring for prolonged time periods - BUT it is a great lightweight powerful bike, nimble and fun in town and on twisties! Heated options would be on my list for winter use too  :190:

Good luck

JC

Hi Trevor and welcome to the forum. The street is great for commuting and if you wear a pair of cycling trousers you'll find your trip more comfortable.

Thanks all  :018:

Day out planned for Wednesday: Hornet, GSR750, FZ8, Triple, Tiger 800, Z750

Any of these will be 'fine' for me (with handguards & heated grips or gloves), but the triple does look the nicest. We'll see...

I tried all the above, except the tiger, and the triple won hands down. I liked the Z750 but it was sooooo heavy  :005:

I loved the look of the Z750 but the weight of it totally put me off.  The GSR is nice in a quirky way but the steel swing arm worried me with the salty sea air and terrible roads we have here.

Heyup Trev and welcome from Belgium

I do the winter commute too, but nowhere near as long - you'll need a ton of acessories to make it viable, and a good coat of ACF, IMHO

Cheers

Liz
