Turning a CatD ST3 into a track bike
on: April 24, 2014, 12:37:16 AM
A bit of history
After Track Daying an old Aprilia RSV for a couple of years, Id got a bit tired of wrestling the thing around and decided it was time for a change. The new bike would need to be a lot lighter and easier to ride, so I started to look for a lightly beaten 675.

The Plan
Buy CatD 675, repair bike, do track days, have fun, try not to crash much, occasionally ride bike on road.

finding the bike was easy enough, its 16 months old , with only 1560 miles on the clock

list of damage
Tank - just about repairable for track use
Lock Stop - absent
Front Forks - one leg bent, the other is usable.
Front Wheel - small flat, will repair.
front brake disks - one bent.
Right Hand Foot Rest - snapped, bracket bent.
Rear Brake Lever - snapped.
Scuffs to Clutch Cover, Side Panel, Rad Guard, Swing Arm, Headlight ..... well, you get the picture.

To be honest, the list is a fair bit longer than I'd hoped for, but that's the chance you take when you buy a damaged bike.

so, after a couple of weeks of frantic eBaying, it all started to come together

just the cosmetic bits to sort out.... then I found a brand new tank from a Daytona Super III and it all started to get out of hand

I then convinced myself that it really needed a Daytona seat unit .....and I quite like the look of this exhaust

Just waiting for this to arrive from ############

look what was waiting for me when I got home last night

really impressed with the fit and quality. just need to convince my pal to paint it for free  :)

thanks for the comments guys, I'll keep updating as I go.

marleymouse ... funny you should mention it feeling like a superMoto after the RSV, I used to TrackDay a Husaberg FS 650 and an Aprilia SXV 550. Both were fantastic fun, but ticking time bombs. If I can capture some of the Feel of the SuperMoto, I'll be a very happy boy.

Always fancied a 650 berg as you say bit maintenance intensive I bet the aprilia was a ball on track...I have owned a 610 SMS husky which was very good & a 625 two 640,s & a 660 ktm lc4.... Apart from the vibes they were all superb so agile & forgiving ..supermotos made me give up sports bikes I have an aprilia dorsoduro 750 at the moment but keep eying up 990 smr,s....will be interested to see the finished product & hear how you get on with it on track

How much did I pay for it???  Isn't that like asking a lady her age??

Well,it wasn't exactly cheap, but it was 16 months old and super low mileage. Payed 3500.

The best bit was, there were two of them and I made my brother buy the other one

Marleymouse. That's a pretty serious SuperMoto fetish going on there. A pal of mine had a 620 and 660 KTM, but they felt a bit flat compared to the Berg... Having said that, my Berg had more rebuilds than the KTM had oil changes.
I really like the Dorsoduro, great looking bike, but I was a bit worried it'd be a bit short on umph for the track.
