I guess it depends how much you ride, how hard you ride (heat being key here) and if you ride in all weathers. The sort bronzing colour happens again very quickly, but I quite like that. The darker blue and areas of rusty brown takes longer, unless you're riding in the wet and mud etc. I think Harpic is on offer in Asda for 1 at moment  :002: Don't buy the limescale only one, you want the one with 'Power Plus 10x' on the front. It also kills 99.9% of bacteria. Lol. Please don't anybody burn themselves...

I assume you haven't got to the stage of worrying about thinning the metal...   :001:

Silly question, are the down pipes stainless?

Yes. Are you about to tell me putting acid on them is a bad idea?

Yesterday I took delivery of a very tatty Arrow Low exhaust. It's going to need more than Harpic! The attached pictures show one of the pipes after being left with Harpic on it ALL night. So, dependent upon how bad your downpipes are, this process might take longer than anticipated  :001: Time to start polishing....

EDIT: before you ask, the blanket is Coco by Chanel.

I realise that you might be feeling despondent after that, but I think it is a huge improvement over where it was.

Keep going, matey! Shiney is just around the corner...  :028:

Thanks, it's just so boooooring. And that's only the first pipe. And I've got some dents to try and remove, lol. Off to Halfords for Autosol as I've only got a smidge left...

Right. I'm bored now, but this gives you an idea....

I started with a rotary wire brush in a cordless drill which improved things dramatically. I can clearly see the system originally had a brushed finish so I might go back to that later on. For polishing I've just been using a cloth pad that's about four inches in diameter, also just in a drill. With Autosol it comes up fairly quickly, but there is much more pitting than I expected. The tube walls are fairly thin so I can't make up my mind how much material to remove. The worst bits will be hidden behind the radiator so I might leave the parts nearest the cylinder head as they are. I'm also hoping this one will be the worst as it's the middle downtube.
