How to measure fork height ?
on: April 26, 2020, 02:55:58 PM
Hi all,

Just a quick one. The workshop manual for the 2013 Street Triple advises the following when it comes to setting fork height:

However I have found that the lower face of the upper triple to not be perpendicular to the forks. Thus it is possible to achieve a 28mm in different ways.
Does anyone know for sure where to measure from on the underside of the upper triple ?

To expand on this I have made this crude drawing.
Note 28mm measured towards the front of the fork goes from the lower face of the upper triple to the top lip of the fork.
However the same 28mm measurement taken on the outer most point of the triple reaches above the fork.

Hi sorry I can't answer your question, but that's a pretty good drawing.

The consensus seems to be around 4mm of the fork leg (not inc. the cap) above the clamp is standard from what I've read on various forums. Mine are 4.5mm and the turn in is fine which agrees, so start there.

your datum is wrong.

this is the wording from Triumph:

"Position the forks within the yokes so that the lip of the outer tube, not the top cap,
is 28 mm above the flat/machined surface on the underside of the upper yoke."

the flat/machined surface is actually the bottom face of the yoke where the handlebar clamp mounting bolt goes through.

the manual has a drawing from a different angle showing this. Unfortunately I'm not savvy enough to add it here. you will have to look at the bottom of the yoke to see.

Thanks for your input guys. I had another look and found the machined flat tucked right under the triple clamp. It is on the very inside of the fork leg so a little tricky to measure, but a little more accessible if turning the bars to one side.

I wouldn't lose too much sleep on getting it exact, bearing in mind tyre wear and pressure could mean +/- 5mm difference in actual front height.
