Where to put a disc lock on a street triple
on: May 17, 2020, 05:58:38 PM
Sometimes an expensive lock can be placed in such a way , that it is easy and fast to break and on the other hand, placing it in a specific place or manner, can make it quite a lot more difficult to break.
Disc locks have there limitations. ( All locks do). The bike can still be lifted, because they do not secure it to an anchor point.
But they are usually also easy to break with a small tool called a bolt screw extractor.
One of the many video's online : Also, when mounting it on the front disc, that disc can easily be unbolted.

So I had a look at my bike and I think placing the disclock on the rear sprocket, will make it a hell more difficult if not impossible to use a bolt screw extractor, or even an angle grinder or saw on it, at least not without damaging vital parts of the motorcycle. It is also near impossible to get that rearsprocket unbolted with the disclock on it.
SO, what are your thoughts? Does it make it a little more tricky for the thieves?

Don't forget a long curly reminder lead from it to your handlebars!

Yes,

I tried, what happened by just moving the bike by hand and.... The chain got lifted and more important, the lock immediately got stuck skewed in the sprocket, even after mm's of movement. I had to carefully hammer it back to be able to unlock it .You do not wanna drive off with the lock still on, there might be damage.

But that can be solved with a reminder lead.

I placed my lock on the front disc. The next time I went to ride it, I forgot about the lock and just by pushing the bike forward, the lock hit the mudguard stay and cracked it. I was gutted.  :230: :230:

I rarely use a lock, but a couple of months ago I went into the city so locked my bike when i left it. I too forgot and as i moved it I managed to crack the mudguard.
After some research I decided to repair it myself. The paint came from BikeColours and I used gorilla glue to stick it back together. along with some careful filling and sanding and a couple of coats of paint you can't see where the repair is any more. Worked out cheaper than a new mudguard!

Yes, i was gutted when I damaged it, but really happy with the repairs.

What i really want is not a disclock but a cloaking device that turns my bike into a non-descript Chinese learner bike with lots of rust and a hole in the seat.  :008:
