Installing an Interphone 12V USB Charger... Help!
on: September 08, 2020, 11:07:09 AM
Hi Fellow Streeters,

I've been trying to figure out how to fit a USB charger to my bike. The Charger has arrived and doesn't seem to have any terminals to fit onto the battery and the instructions are saying to fit the red wire to the ignition switch...? Looking for some info as to where the ignition switch is and  how to fit it? Do I use solder or add terminals to the wires with a crimping tool?. Pictures attached for reference.

Complete noob with this sort of stuff sorry.

Thanks for the help.

Do you want the USB socket to be permanently live or only live with the ignition on?  If perm. live, simply crimp https://www.screwfix.com/p/insulated-crimp-yellow-6mm-pack-of-100/52580 onto the ends of the leads and attach them to the battery terminals.

If you want it ignition-only live, do exactly the same as above with the black lead onto the -ive battery terminal.  For the red (+ive), you have to splice into a switched circuit.  You could use the headlight feed.  You could use https://www.screwfix.com/p/insulated-crimp-ebb-blue-butt-pack-of-100/47402 and then crimp both wires (the headlight and the USB +ive) into one end of it.

Just make sure that the Headlight fuse has enough ampage to feed both items.  It almost certainly will, unless you plan to run a kettle or bar heater off your USB!

Thanks twooo,

I think it might just be easier to crimp on some terminals and attach to the battery. My question would then be, will this circuit drain my battery when the bike is switched off? Obviously I won't leave anything charging on it when the bike is not running.

Wouldn't have thought so.  No reason for it to really.
