Stiff throttle?
on: September 15, 2020, 09:41:27 PM
Hi guys..

Have a new to name 2013 ST R..  after riding it a few times the throttle seems quite stiff, is this normal, or does it sound like it needs some adjustment?.. my last bike, Street Twin, had a really light throttle... after 20 minutes on the Street triple, my hand is tired.

No, your throttle shouldn't be tight like that. Might be getting pinched somewhere, or just need lubing. Shine a torch in the side of the frame between the engine top and the air box and see if anything's rubbing the cables.

Is it easy to lube the cables?

Just thinking there, is it that the throttle is difficult to turn and is sticking or is it difficult to turn because the return spring effect is too strong? If it's the latter, it's likely something is fouling or pinching the cable rather than it requiring oil.

The Street Twin has a 'fly by wire' throttle, pretty much all modern Triumph motorcycles have them and have really light throttles.

Pre 765 Street Triples have conventional throttles which are heavier but are still lighter than pretty much every regular cable actuated Honda I've ridden ranging from 2003 CB600F Hornet, 2004 CBR1000RR Fireblade and 2009 CBR600RR.

I've owned my 2014 STR 675 since it was just under 2 years old and under 3,000 miles. Its close to 28,000 now and I too always felt it can be slightly tiring to hold the throttle open at times.

Grippier race gloves and a light grip on the bars helps a lot
