Donington is in Lecestershire just off the M1 at J23a.
I think it's a lovely track, and one of the few they haven't messed about with by putting extra chicanes in.
I've ridden at Brands Hatch Indy & GP, Donington National & GP, Rockingham, Cadwell, Oulton Park, Silverstone National and been round Thruxton in a car.
Of these I'd say my least favourite were Silverstone and Rockingham.
Oulton is a great circuit, but I preferred it before the chicanes were put in.
Cadwell is brilliant but a bloody long way from you.
For a first track day I think a day on the Donington National circuit ( misses out the Melbourne Loop) would be ideal, flows nicely, good visibility (other than the blind entrance to Coppice) and plenty of run off should he have a scary moment. Good for spectating too, you can see most of the circuit from various viewing points.

My first track day was Donington which is great but Oulton Park is awesome, well worth the long trip for you.
