Most common socket sizes
« on: May 19, 2017, 11:47:42 AM »
I dont currently have any socket sets and I'm thinking of investing in some but I wondered what the most common socket sizes are for typical jobs on the Street Triple? I've rather buy 3 or 4 individual sockets for specific sizes that I might need rather than invest in a 100piece socket set and not use 95% of them.

I'm thinking for jobs like swapping out the exhaust for starters but likely I'll attempt more jobs once I get more confident.

Thanks

A standard Halfords socket kit will be enough http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/socket-sets/halfords-advanced-28-piece-metric-socket-set-3-8 The only specialist size you'll need is a 27mm for the rear axle nut (I'm sure someone will correct me on this)

You might as well buy a whole set, as they're always useful to have around and it's better to have them, then have to buy more later.

I'll also add:
-A breaker bar for the axle nut
-A larger adjustable spanner
-Front spindle tool.
-Abbastand

Thanks, I've ordered an Abba stand today actually. The Halfords sets are half price at the minute too so might get one then today whilst I'm on a roll.

I'm not sure what some of those other things are but I'll Google it

If you're messing with the rear axle a torque wrench would be handy.

I bought a 27mm socket from Halfords a couple of weeks back. Less than six quid.

If you're splashing out add some hex bits (allen key) to suit whatever square drive size you decide on to tackle those socket screws Triumph are keen on - 5 mm is a must have. I echo the comments regarding a torque wrench.

Check out some of the specialist tool stores such as Machine Mart or Cromwell (next to the Harl*y shop at Millbrook) for inspiration.

Aldi or Lidl for socket sets or join Halfords Trade card thingy and get great discounts on stuff like socket sets. I would always try to buy a set with all the sizes in, that way you're less likely to loose them  :028:

This has gotta be a bit of a bargain if you want one of the Halfords Professional range...or if you have any missing Halfords sockets / broken ratchet, although they are guaranteed for life  :028:

Thanks everyone, today I went into Halfords and got the 200 piece set as it's such a good price with it being half price currently. I'll probably never use half of them but it looks good
