Oil capacity
« on: July 08, 2018, 01:40:48 PM »
Folks.....
2009 street triple r.
Just changed the oil.
From what I can find the capacity of the bike is 3.5l. But I noticed the Haynes manual says the capacity was changed in 2009 and increased by 0.5l.
I've checked the dipstick and with 3.5l approx in the engine the marker seems low.
Reluctant to add too much more without being sure of the capacity.
Anyone have experience of the correct oil level?

Think I'm sorted.
Looks like 3.5l gets me to just above min. Left it a while and added a little more. Now sitting on max.

I've never looked up the oil capacity of any vehicle, just kept adding until max level on the dipstick / level gauge is reached

Was always told by various race and non race mechanics to never fill to the max line.
Over filling can damage oil seals.
Some where between min and half and check regularly is the key.

Interesting, obviously filling above max line can have dire consequences but it would be interesting to hear how filling to the max can damage oil seals, the cynic in me says it's an excuse to use less oil at service time.

In my near 30 years of driving and almost 10 of riding I've never heard that before.

Following the manufacturer's instructions can cause damage?

Can't help think there's an ulterior motive for telling you that.

Have you got the new dipstick? It was changed making it shorter to increase the oil volume. Lots of threads if you search.

Yeah I know there's a newer shorter dipstick for the higher capacity.
It's not been changed during my ownership of 4 years today. I think it's the longer one I have
