Oil leak
« on: November 13, 2019, 02:11:50 PM »
Hi -
Have recently done some town riding mainly in heavy traffic. Upon returning I noticed some oil was weeping, apparently from around the the plastic dipstick cap and running down the crankcase. Only a very small amount of oil - not even enough to drip onto the ground. Dipstick is tight. Happened once or twice before. Bike running well. Any ideas ?
Thanks !

Take the oil filler cap off and have a look at the rubber o ring seal around the top. There shouldn't be any cracks etc. If it's there and it looks ok, give it a wipe, carefully wipe around the clutch cover where the cap screws in and then put the cap back in. It should be snug but not stupidly tight. Mine usually dribbles about after I've changed the oil (easy Tom) where a bit of oil sits on the rim of the hole.

Screwing the filler cap in too tight can cause the o ring to stretch and bulge out, breaking the seal. A hamfisted mechanic did that to mine and I had to replace the o ring - measure it and buy one a bit smaller off ebay.
